| Amalfi; Beach | Statue of Flavio Gioia |
Amalfi Town has a surprisingly compact centre for a city which vied with Genoa and Pisa (before the growth and dominance of Venice) for maritime trade. Disastrously an earthquake in 1343 led to a large part of the city literally slid into the sea. If you arrive by boat or car your starting point is likely to be the marina area where there is parking a (in season crowded) beach area. Amalfi's maritime history is recorded throughout this area including a statue of Flavio Gioia; considered at one time the inventor of the magnetic sailor's compass (despite this being refuted, he still has a crater on the moon (!) named after him).

| Duomo di Sant' Andrea | Duomo Arches |
Oppposite are the 62 broad steps up to the Duomo di Sant' Andrea. It is only when you consider that Amalfi's population in the early 14th century (prior to the earthquake) was c.70,000 compared to less than 6,000 today that such an imposing edifice makes sense. It is dedicated to the apostle Andrew and in its crypt are claimed to still rest religious relics of the Saint which were transported here in 1208 following the sack of Constantinople. However he continued to travel; relics including part of his head were in the 15th century dispatched to St. Peters in the Vatican and thence to Patras in Greece in 1964 (the site of his crucifixion and original burial place). The "cathedral" is in effect a complex consisting of the 9th century Basilica del Crocifisso, extended in the 10th century to create a cathedral and joined by the crypt constructed in the two years prior to the arrival of Saint Andrews relics. The adjoining Arabic style Cloister of Paradise (1266-68) was built as a crypt for the Amalfi aristocracy. Although the cathedrals facade was rebuilt in the late 19th century, its large brass doors are original (made in Constantinople in 1060) and from the arches at the front you can enjoy a panoramic view of the town and surroundings.

| Shop with the locals. | A bite to eat? |
Heading north along Via del Duomo you will find some shops and restaurants although most of the activity is centred on Piazza Duomo. In the upper area of the town (behind the cathedral) is the Museo Civico (historic maritime documents including the Tavole Amalfitane; Amalfi's maritime code) and the Museo della Carta a museum to paper production housed in a 13h century paper mill.
