How & Why to Visit Pompeii (Pompei)

To visit Pompeii from Sorrento don't consider driving, the easiest option is to use the "Circumvesuviana" train (c. 20 minutes)  from Sorrento or Sant'Agnello. Pompeii really needs little introduction, the history, the tragedy, the ongoing process of discovery & (sympathetic) restoration. However if you want to collect more than the t-shirt either commit a full day (or more) or have a clear plan about what you want to see.

Registered guides are available at the entrance as are site maps and audio guides (with seperate itineries for 2, 4 & 6 hours) you can hire from the visitor centre. It is a vast site and in the heat of the Neapolitan sun it can be hard work: good footwear, clothing and a hat will help, but expect to be ready to put your feet up when you get home!
