| View Above Positano | View; Via G Marconi |
Positano is in a dramatic if not easily accessible location, nestled against the coast with steep hills all around. Even from the distance you can see the dome of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta at its heart. If you arrive by road then you can enjoy great views onto the town from Via G. Marconi (SS163) and it is best to park and take a bus down to the centre.

Many coaches will drop you to the east of Positano's centre and then you will need to walk down Via Cristoforo Columbo but it is worth it for great coastal views.

| Art for Sale | Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta |
Buses drop off at the junction of Via C.Colombo & Via dei Mulini. From here a short walk down takes you through an area with shops which are clearly targeting up-market tourists looking for clothes and artworks. You will then arrive at Flavio Gioia square and the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta with its beautiful majolica-mosaic dome.

| Inside the Church | Madonna & Child |
In its interior above the altar is a 13th century Byzantine panel depicting the Virgin & Child and it was its arrival that according to folklore gave Positano its name. A Saracen ship was passing having stolen the panel from Byzantium when they hit a violent storm. They heard a voice saying "posa, posa" (lay me down) which they duly did on the nearest land and the storm abated. A church was built in honour of the Virgin on that spot; which of course was on the beach of what is now Positano.

| Positano Restaurant Boat | View; Via Positanesi d'American |
The Marina and adjoining Spiaggia Grande (beach) is where most people congregate either to catch boats, eat, sunbathe or just people watch. The Marina area is lined with upmarket restaurants but that isn't enough, go to the jetty and you will find (complimentary) restaurant boats wanting to whisk you away to another beach and of course for lunch. Head along a small coast path to the east along Via Positanesi d'American and you can get more great views and a further beach area.
