By boat you arrive at Sorrento's  Marina Piccola (not, despite the name Marina Grande) and you will see an array of original grand hotels on the clifftop above, from here there are regular buses (you can walk but it's a bit of a climb!) to Piazza Tasso the central piazza and main intersection. It is named after the poet Torquato Tasso (1544-95) author of Jerusalem Delivered (La Gerusalemme liberata) which describes the conflict between Muslims and Christians during the siege of Jerusalem at the end of the First Crusade. A short walk north west is Piazza Antonino named after Sorrento's patron saint and where in the Basilica on the square his remains were entombed. He is depicted standing on a sea creature; in respect of his miraculous saving of a child swallowed by a whale.

Sorrento's Marina Grande is a worthwhile place to visit and a pleasant walk down from Piazza Antonino with great views of the Bay of Naples from Villa Comunale and Piazza Vittoria. The route down takes you down a steep winding cobbled road. Marina Grande is despite its name more a small traditional fishing port around which restaurants and cafes have developed along its waterside and on jetties constructed into the harbour area. Don't come here for its beach but it does offer good quality (and generally reasonably priced) fish and seafood dishes in a quite relaxing environment.

A Shop & A Chat? Plenty of Places to Eat

At dusk Sorrento transforms and particularly around Piazza Tasso where traffic is limited and its restaurants and bars become venues for "people watching" as tourists and locals converge for an evening "passegiata". The narrow lanes of the adjoining old town likewise offers plenty of restaurants, bars and opportunities to shop or stop and have a chat. Whilst there are bars that are obviously targeted at visiting foreigners it maintains a civilised feel and there is plenty of variety of places to eat or drink.
