When to visit the Amalfi Coast & the Bay of Naples?

Let's be realistic; the Amalfi Coast has a stunning coastline and a world famous coastal road. This means that during July & August driving and parking in or near any of the main venues will be problematic. However it has an excellent public transport infrastructure on land and by sea. If you prefer to drive it is not as chaotic as its reputation suggests, there are just coach drivers who drive the road many times daily, keep your wits about you and give them space! Inland roads become far less problematic (the road to Ravello is of course "entertaining" but ultimately worth it.

If you want to visit the ancient sites (e.g. Pompeii) then Spring (April/May) or Autumn (Sept/Oct) are obviously favourable. Prices may be lower (night time temperatures more refreshing)and reaching and parking near the main towns will be easier. Note in Positano, Ravello and Amalfi driving into the centre of the towns is limited to local residents.

Fortunately to get to Pompeii, Herculaneum and, if you wish, Naples you can use the excellent Circumvesuviana from Sorrento, the traffic from Sorrento to Naples can be chaotic and makes driving slow. Likewise the ferries, hydrofoils and "Metro Del Mare" operate services from the beginning or end of April until the beginning or end of October.
